Pioneer 90001 arriving at Ipswich with almost a complete Virgin liveried Mark 3 set. Contrary to 'one' policy of removing the original names after a repaint, 90001 was sent to Norwich wearing its 'BBC Midlands Today' nameplates; the scars of which can just be seen in the picture - behind the first grille. The loco that launched the revolution...90002 'Mission Impossible' at Crewe with a London bound service. 90002 was the first loco to carry the now familiar red and black livery, launched at Manchester Piccadilly in 1998 and named by Richard Branson and Melinda Messenger. (Aug-'01)

90002 at Norwich after arrival from London. Compare the difference in shades between this and 90003 in the next image; a change that was made after paint was used instead of vinyl (as with 90003).

With the launch of the Greater Anglia franchise taking place a few days earlier, 90003 is seen here still looking pristine. Appearances can be deceptive however, as the rainbow livery was applied in vinyl form directly over its previous Virgin Trains red and black, branding and all after an oversight by Willesden TMD meaning it wasn't rubbed down! The Virgin branding can sometimes be seen in the right light. (May-'04)
